How to Build a Multi-Agent Research Assistant in Python

A multi-agent research system that parallelizes information gathering, debates findings to surface disagreements, synthesizes into a structured report, and cites sources — all within a controlled token budget.

Patterns used: ReAct, FanOutFanIn, Debate, Pipeline, CompressMiddleware

Requirements

  • Functional — gather information from web, academic, and industry sources in parallel; surface disagreement between an optimistic and a skeptical read of the findings; synthesize a structured report under 500 words.
  • Non-functional — parallel gathering should be as fast as the slowest single source, not the sum of all three.
  • Audit — the final report's claims should be traceable to which source agent (web/academic/ industry) surfaced them, and the debate stage's verdict should show both sides considered.
  • Not required — no persistent memory across separate research sessions (each topic is researched independently).

Architecture decisions

Decision Why Why not the alternative
Fan-Out/Fan-In for gathering Three source types (web, academic, industry) are independent — none needs another's output to run. A Pipeline here would force web→academic→industry sequencing with no benefit, tripling latency for zero quality gain.
Debate for surfacing disagreement The value is explicitly adversarial: an optimist and a skeptic force genuine counter-evidence into the record, judged by a third agent. Self-Reflection would have one agent critique itself — it can't produce a genuinely opposing read the way two independently-prompted agents can.
Three separate workflows (gather, debate, synthesize), chained by the caller Each stage is independently testable and independently reusable — a caller could run just gather for a lighter-weight summary without the debate stage. A single fused workflow would need a new composite pattern; three workflows reuse existing patterns and let each be validated on its own.

Four-pillar mapping

Requirement Pillar Capability
Parallel source gathering Execution FanOutFanIn pattern
Adversarial fact-checking Execution Debate pattern
Stay within a token budget across all three stages Context pyagent-compress CompressMiddleware
Track daily research spend Observability observability.cost_budget
Trace each source/debate/synthesis call Observability observability.tracing

Production checklist

Ran this exact blueprint through PyAgentAdapter.compile() and inspected the real diagnostics:

  • All three workflows run as declaredgather, debate, and synthesize each compile and execute against the native pattern registry with no diagnostics on workflow structure.
  • ⚠️ observability.cost_budget is declared but not auto-enforced — compiling emits BUDGET_UNSUPPORTED: the $100/day budget is recorded but not enforced. Wire real enforcement via graph.wire_cost_tracker(tracker).
  • No context.compression block is declared in this blueprint — the CompressMiddleware token-budget behavior shown in the Python implementation isn't yet expressed as a context: block here, so it isn't captured by a compile-time diagnostic either. Add one if declared enforcement matters for your deployment.
  • The three workflows are chained by the caller, not by the blueprint itself — there's no single declared "run gather, then debate, then synthesize" sequence; that orchestration between workflows currently lives in whatever code invokes them.

Expected Output

Researching: Nvidia's position in the AI infrastructure market

============================================================
## Executive Summary
• Nvidia holds ~80% GPU market share for AI training workloads
• H100/H200 demand exceeds supply by 3-4x; GB200 NVLink racks backlogged
• Key risk: AMD MI300X gaining traction at hyperscalers, custom silicon (TPU/Trainium)

## Key Findings
• Revenue: $44.1B (FY Q3 2025), up 94% YoY — driven by Data Center segment ($30.8B)
• Margins: Gross margin 74.6%, operating margin 62.4% — best-in-class for hardware
• CUDA ecosystem: 4M+ developers, 3,000+ GPU-optimized applications (arxiv: "CUDA Dominance
in ML Workloads", Chen et al. 2024)
• Announced partnerships with AWS, Azure, GCP for GB200 NVLink rack deployments

## Bull Case
Strong moat: CUDA ecosystem is 10+ years deep and switching costs are very high...

## Bear Case
AMD MI300X achieves 95% of H100 performance at 20% lower cost in benchmarks...

## Uncertainties
• Custom silicon timeline (Apple, Google, Amazon) — 2-3 year horizon unclear
• Export restrictions to China (~15% of historical revenue)
• GB200 yield rates and supply ramp

## Recommendation
Long-term hold. Near-term demand visibility strong through FY2026...

Standard ~$0.012 ~$0.018 ~$0.008 ~$0.038
Deep ~$0.025 ~$0.040 ~$0.015 ~$0.080

Compression saves ~40-50% vs uncompressed. At 100 research queries/day, standard depth costs ~$115/month.
